Brave New World
"Our task in this project was to recreate a scene from the book Brave New World in a graphic novel form. Most students were paired into teams of authors and artists, though several worked alone and handled both aspects of the task. The authors wrote a paper analyzing one of the main characters in the novel and used noun-phrase apposites and concessive theses to make their arguments. Artists focused on key choices of moment, frame, image, word, and flow in creating a graphic novel about the chosen scene. Our exhibition featured both an art show of our graphic novels, and a seminar discussion about Brave New World."

THE HANGING

-Artist Self-Assessment
The most challenging part of creating this graphic novel was figuring out how to describe in an drawing the scene I was portraying. I found this difficult because we were limited to a certain amount of pages, four to six, and I ended up having 5 pages but found it hard to fit all of what was in the chapter on the pages. While trying to portray the scene on the paper I skipped a little bit of the interview but covered enough for the reader to understand. I overcame this challenge by talking with my partner and figuring out what the panels should say and how they should be positioned. Overall I feel that I over came all the challenges that came my way throughout doing this. The panel that I am most proud of is the two on my last page. I am most proud of them because I feel it is very strong in how its drawn. Also because its the one I refined the most. I refined it the most because its such a strong descriptive image with how it's drawn and how you can look at it. I feel that the way I drew the feet up close is leading to something big. Then the whole page is John hanging from the lighthouse. Mostly I feel this was my best page with the two panels it consisted of and that it was clean and explainable. There are many things that I am proud of that have come from this project. One thing I am most proud of is that I finished it and that it looked nice too. One thing I have learned that I didn't expect was the drawing part. I didn't know I would be able to draw all of these things and color them and have it look good. I think it turned out better than I expected because I was actually enjoying what I was doing. This project helped me become a better artist and more creative in how to portray an writing into an drawing. |
