Shakespeare Project Reflection:
For “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” project we were to write an essay on a topic either about the lovers and how it relates to our “Brave New World” project or how the authority figures are involved. I chose to do the one that involved the authority figures and am writing how they were in the lovers lives. The other part of this project was to present a play. My role in the play was a fairy and producing the play I was apart of the costume design group.
I connected to this project with enjoying the writing. I feel this project was difficult for me to connect with the play, only because I am more shy and not as outgoing so that was harder for me to connect to then the essay. I also enjoyed the Pyramus and Thisbe seminar. I enjoyed it because it was fun and good for me to listen to everyone's opinion. Overall I enjoyed the essay the most.
This project was difficult for me with the play. It was difficult because I am not an actor nor am I an very outgoing person in front of large groups. Each time we rehearsed the play I struggled actually acting out my part. It was hard because I wasn't sure how I should've done it. So overall the play was the most difficult for me through this project.
During this project I learned a lot about myself. One thing was that I need to just put myself out there and go with the flow. Second was that I can collaborate pretty well with my peers without arguing. Third that I am not the best actor but I can always try. Lastly I learned that I really enjoy writing. This essay has been very fun and interesting to write and I've enjoyed it.
-Why, 400 years later, does the English-speaking world still gravitate/celebrate the works of William Shakespeare?
I feel that we still gravitate towards Shakespeare's work because it is written very well but also because the story lines of the play are interesting and connectable. Also because there are different plays. Some have love and romance while others have death and tragedy. I also think that even though these are such old plays written by him that we still enjoy them because it's a different aspect of the past. Though I think everyone has their very own explanation for this question.

Mask Project:
Socialization refers to the lifelong process of obeying and disobeying the norms. Socialization can affect you both positively and negatively. You can be positively socialized by getting compliments and by having people say nice things about you. You can be negatively socialized by magazines and commercials saying you should buy a certain thing to look a certain way or that you should buy this kind of clothing to look like everyone else. When in the end we need to just accept who we are and stay true to ourselves and not change anything about ourselves.
For this project socialization was our main topic throughout. We had to write an essay on how we have been socialized by class, religion, if we are female or male, etc. For our mask we had to chose a symbol that was representative of our essay. For my essay I focused on how i've been socialized as a female, and how i've been socialized both positively and negatively as a female. One way i have been positively socialized is by people complimenting me and making me feel good about myself. One way I have been negatively socialized is by fake people on tv influencing me to be somewhat like them and that we need to be exactly alike when in reality we need to stay true to ourselves and not change a thing about ourselves, and just stick to who we are. For my mask I chose to do all different kinds of flowers all over the mask. The flowers represent how everyone is different but the flowers are beautiful so we are beautiful in our own way. We don’t need to be someone that we aren't.
The process we went through to write all of our paragraphs was a step by step process. First we made our topic sentences for our TEA paragraphs. Second we made our evidence to go along with our topic sentences. Third we made our analysis for our paragraph. Once we had our TEA paragraphs finished we made another paragraph describing socialization and what it is. Once we had those four paragraphs done we moved on to our introduction and our conclusion. Our introduction paragraph had to include a hook, to get the reader interested, it also had to include a metaphor and quote. Our conclusion was a recap of our whole story and we brought our metaphor back in and explained how it was used and involved in our story.
So far this year I am proud of all my work i've accomplished. Though I feel that my humanities project has been my strongest and the most completed. I feel this was because I enjoyed this project a lot and it was something I would never had done in a non project based school. I feel that the project completed in humanities has helped me become a better person in a way that I don't want to be someone i'm not and that i should just stay true to myself and not be influenced by the magazines and tv commercials with all the photoshopped models.

Essay:
Socialization
“The woman who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been before.” - Albert Einstein.
Have you been socialized positively, negatively or both? I feel that we all have been socialized in some way, shape or form. This quote is an inspiration for me because us women are just as strong as men. We have all been socialized in some way, shape or form. I chose to use that quote because it is inspirational to me and should be to other women as well. I think this because this quote in other words says that all women don't need to be alike; we are all different and should go where we want, not have others tell us what we should do. Try and be the first chick to leave the nest. By this metaphor I mean that it is like we are all in nest, staying in the safe zone and not willing to go out of our bounds and be the person we really are. This applies to me by me becoming different and changing and not caring what other people think of me because I'm just being myself. Everyone is socialized differently, but how? I know that I have been socialized both positively and negatively as a female.
Socialization refers to the lifelong process of learning and disobeying norms. Society has created norms that we all have found and learned to obey. You learn these norms at a young age by your parents introducing them to you. There are some people who disobey the norms. When you disobey the norms there are consequences included. “ Instead we are born into a specific set of social identities.” (Harro, 3) This sentence defines that we are all born into a certain identity and that we are that identity for the rest of our lives. Every family or religion you are born into have different norms. “Wear clothing, especially of a similar style that others wear.” (http://examples.yourdictionary.com/social-norm-examples.html). Some of the norms in our society today are The norms will be taught to you throughout your whole entire life and by the end of your life there is a possibility you won’t even know all of the norms of socialization.
I have been socialized positively by others complimenting me and saying I should model. Another way I have been positively socialized is when friends, family and the community compliment me which makes me feel good about myself. When people give me compliments and make me feel good it gives me a sense of power in which I feel the need to give that person a compliment as well, to make them feel just as good. Furthermore, I have been positively socialized is by this one woman saying I should model with her agency in Denver. When this interaction with this women occurred, it was summer and I was on a plane by myself. She asked me how old I was and then complimented me. She then said she had a modeling agency in Denver and told me I should stop by whenever I'm in Denver. In most tv commercials for teens or in magazines, teens see these beautiful women all photoshopped and fake and believe they have to look like that. One example would be girls in the teen magazines all photoshopped with makeup covering their beautiful faces. Or in the proactive commercials, they want anyone with bad acne to buy it because they use famous people in the commercials to make the teens feel like they need it. When teens see these and feel that way they start to act different and dress different and strive to look like that. They are all trying to be someone they are not. By the way she made me feel about myself, I hold my head up high and stand strong. I believe that other young women my age should carry themselves the same way.
I have been socialized negatively by boys saying girls belong in the kitchen or by saying we can’t work in the mechanics department. Again I have been negatively socialized is by guys saying that we cant do certain sports, such as football. Many men think this is true, when in reality women are just as strong as them. Women are capable of anything they want to be capable of. We have the right to play any sport we would like. For girls we weren't allowed to play football but nowadays we have a girls football club called the powder puffs league. The cultures we all live in and the way we have been brought up by our parents are different so maybe one of my peers has grown up with there parents saying that girls are to only work at home and make food for the family when other kids have grown up with their parents saying they can do whatever they want. One other way I have been negatively socialized is by guys saying that girls can’t work in the mechanics department because we aren’t strong enough or buff enough to do that. Many men think that girls can’t work in the mechanics department because girls aren’t strong enough or won’t be able to keep up with them. All women know their limits, some women can go farther than some men and also other women. Having society think girls can’t when we can, pushes some of us to amaze society and prove them wrong.
Many other people have been socialized differently by race, class, religion, etc. When I lived in Arizona I had multiple friends that were a different race, not everyone made fun of them but some people did and when those people did, it made them feel bad about themselves. When a person is a different color, many people feel the need to look at them differently, when they are just the same as us just a different color. Some people who are a different color feel that the cops or law target them more than they would white people. An example of socialization within race would be one of the videos we watched when we were first learning about socialization. The video was from the tv show “What Would You do?” and they were testing what people would do if it were a white man trying to steal a bike compared to a black man trying to steal a bike. More people stopped to when the black man was trying to steal it and when the white man was trying to steal it not many people stopped and questioned the situation. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0kV_b3IK9M). Also some of my friends were a different religion, like Jewish or Christian, like I said about my friends of a different race, not everyone makes fun of them but there was always that one person that did, and when that person made fun of them it made them feel bad about themselves. Some people who are from a different religion have had stuff said about them that people now believe. Like one of my Jewish friends has said that people makes jokes about him when they see a penny, because supposively Jews like pennies All of the world is different and has different cultures and religions. Some of my friends were from a different culture and they did some things differently which didn't bother me but it bothered others. We need to just accept everyone and know that we are all similar but different in our own ways.
Throughout society everyone is socialized. We have all gotten accustomed to the norms of socialization and some of us don't know how to stay true ourselves. I have learned that we don’t need to look like the girls in commercials or the girls that model. Going back to my metaphor to be the first chick out of the nest to me means that you are taking a step in a different direction and being different. So we have all been socialized one way or another both positively and negatively but we have to learn that we all need to just accept ourselves.
